Sourcing Products and Finding Suppliers in China

Imagine this: You’ve identified a hot new product that could skyrocket your business’s growth. You know that sourcing from China offers the best prices and the widest variety, but where do you start? Whether you’re new to the process or seeking to optimize your current approach, I’ll share key tips that can help you not only find the right suppliers but also ensure that your sourcing journey is smooth and successful.

Online Platforms

Best e-commerce platforms in China

Websites like Alibaba, Made-in-China and 1688 are popular for their vast listings of suppliers. These platforms allow you to search for specific products, compare offerings, and review supplier ratings.

  • Alibaba is the world’s largest B2B (business-to-business) marketplace. It is ideal for global buyers looking for a broad range of products, supported by secure payment options and trade assurance services.
  • Made-in-China is another leading B2B platform. Personally, I prefer Alibaba. And actually some suppliers maintain accounts on both Alibaba and Made-in-China to maximize their reach and visibility.
  • 1688 is Alibaba’s domestic counterpart, focusing on the Chinese market. While the platform is in Chinese and geared towards local buyers, it’s a treasure trove for those willing to navigate it. Many suppliers on 1688 also supply to sellers on Alibaba, often at lower prices since 1688 is closer to the source. This makes it a platform worth exploring, especially if you’re looking for high-quality products at competitive prices. However, navigating 1688 can be challenging due to the language barrier and the nuances of local business practices. For this reason, you might consider working with a Chinese agent who can help you effectively use the platform.

For Individual Purchases:

If you’re looking to buy items for personal use rather than for business purposes, consider exploring China’s domestic e-commerce platforms. These platforms offer competitive prices and a wide variety of options, but they are entirely in Chinese and require local payment methods and a Chinese shipping address. It’s often best to work with a Chinese contact or agent who can help you navigate these platforms, make purchases on your behalf.

Here’s a quick overview of the most popular platforms:

  • Taobao is one of China’s largest e-commerce platforms, offering everything from everyday household items to unique niche products.
  • Tmall is a premium version of Taobao, focusing on higher-end brands and products. It’s an ideal platform if you’re looking for authentic products from well-known brands, with a similar user interface to Taobao. Personally, I use Taobao for most of my everyday purchases. The prices are reasonable, and I’m satisfied with the quality of the products. Taobao also offers a membership program called 88VIP, which is somewhat comparable to Amazon Prime. 88VIP members enjoy benefits such as discounts on select products, free shipping on returns, and access to music and video memberships.
  • JD.com is another major e-commerce platform in China, known for its fast delivery and strict quality control. It’s particularly strong in electronics, appliances, and other high-demand items. I prefer using JD.com when purchasing smartphones or large household appliances.
  • Pinduoduo is a newer platform that has gained massive popularity for its group-buying deals and deep discounts. Even though the price is low, I rarely use Pinduoduo. I don’t like the quality.
  • Xianyu is a second-hand marketplace operated by Alibaba, where you can find used items at discounted prices.

Google Search

Sometimes, going directly to a supplier’s website via a Google search can yield results that aren’t available on major platforms. This method is particularly useful for niche products or finding manufacturers that may not be listed on large marketplaces.

Local Sourcing Agent

Many factories in China do not maintain their own websites or register on platforms like Alibaba. Instead, they often supply their products directly to trading companies or larger suppliers. It is possible that when you place an order with a supplier on Alibaba, they may be outsourcing the production to one of these factories. A sourcing agent can connect you directly with these manufacturers, allowing you to bypass middlemen and potentially secure better pricing and more direct control over the production process. However, these factories typically lack English-speaking staff, which can make direct communication challenging. This is where partnering with a local sourcing agent becomes invaluable. A professional sourcing agent can handle communication, negotiations, and quality control on your behalf, ensuring that your orders meet your exact specifications.

Wholesale Markets

Evaluating Suppliers

Once you’ve identified potential suppliers, particularly if you’re planning large-scale production, it’s crucial to vet them thoroughly.

Initial Communication

Start by exchanging emails to gauge the supplier’s responsiveness and professionalism. Discuss your product requirements, lead times, and pricing. This step will help you determine if the supplier is reliable and whether they can meet your expectations.

Factory Visits

If possible, visit the supplier’s factory in person. This allows you to verify their production capabilities, inspect the working conditions, and build a stronger relationship. If a personal visit isn’t feasible, consider hiring a local agent to visit on your behalf and provide a detailed report.

Third-Party Factory Audits

For an added layer of security, consider hiring a third-party firm to conduct a factory audit.

Ensuring Product Quality

Request Samples

Before placing a large order, always request samples from the supplier. This allows you to check the quality of the product and make necessary adjustments before production.

Local Agent Inspection

If you’re working with a local agent, they can perform quality checks on your behalf. They can inspect the products, take photos or videos, and report back to you, ensuring that everything meets your specifications.

Third-Party Inspection

For larger orders, you may consider to invest in third-party inspection services.
