Why do clothing suppliers always charge sampling fee? What are the cost involved in creating a sample?

As you know, when you reach out to suppliers to ask them make samples for you, they always ask for sampling fee, especially for those initial collaboration.

It is said that it takes more time and efforts to develop samples than go into production.

Why? Below list the mainly cost for the suppliers to make samples. It would help to give you an idea.

Creating a Pattern:

Creating a pattern is an essential step in clothing production, as it serves as a guide for the entire production process.

For complex styles, making a paper pattern can take up to two days.

Fabric & Trims Sourcing:

If you have selected a specific fabric, the clothing factory just need to order the fabric by the contact details you provided and that would save some time. If you don’t, they will need to arrange fabric sourcing, show you options and get your confirmation before they could proceed. It takes time.

Material Costs/ Fabric & Trims:

To make a sample, normally it just needs a few meters of fabric. However, the fabric suppliers sell fabric by rolls. So there is always surcharge to purchase fabric for sampling. It is called “cutting fee”. If the fabric doesn’t have stock or if you would like to use a customized fabric, it may not be workable until you go into bulk production. You would go with some other alternative options at the sampling stage.

Sewing Cost:

As styles become more and more complicated and complex, the cost of hiring a skilled sewer has increased accordingly.

It takes half or one day to finish a simple style. While it would take 3-4 days for some complicated styles.

These are the mainly cost for the supplier to make samples.

In fact, making samples take quite a lot time, efforts and cost. The sampling fee usually only covers the cost of materials, without earning any additional profit for the supplier.

If you have details on the fabric and trims, please send me. If not, I will arrange fabric sourcing on my side.

And I will take care of the rest.

We charge 500 RMB for a sample, not including shipping cost. If the style order is up to 100pcs, sample fee can be returned.

Once all are clear and details are confirmed, fabric and accessories are ready, we will start making the samples.
